Randolph county is the oldest vicinity West of the Allegheny Mountains, Kaskaskia being established in the latter part of the 17th. century, with a settlement of about 200 people. Peak growth years for Kaskaskia were between 1810 and 1820, when the populace reached nearly 7000 persons.

In 1795 Randolph county was established, by proclamation of General St. Clair, who was Governor of the Northwest Territory, with the county taking in most of Southern Illinois south of St. Clair County. Kaskaskia remained the capital until 1820 when the river finally won, and the capital moved to Vandalia.

The county has had six flags waving over it since 1673, those being:

for ENGLAND.....1763
for VIRGINIA...(when Clark came to Kaskaskia)...1778
for the 13 ORIGINAL COLONIES....1787
for ILLINOIS......1818
and our present United States Flag.

These flags may be seen in the County Courthouse in Chester, IL, where they are proudly displayed.
