The Commandants duties were many. These are
some of the things he was to do:
Keeping peace between the Indians and the
French in order to promote the fur trade,
to encourage Indian attacks on tribes too
friendly with the English,
keep the habitants and traders in line,
each year make a visit to all settlements
within his district and take a census, noting
ages, sexes, whether French, Indian, white,
slave or negroe, note amount of land cleared,
its value and the occupation of each habitant.
to note the number of men capable of bearing
arms in each village, determine the quantity
of powder and lead on hand, see that companies
of militia were formed, and to arrange for
a signal system from settlement to settlement
by fire, bells or cannon, in order that the
militia could march in an emergency.
