Louis DeROUSSE
Almost two centuries ago, (1686), the first
family of the name DeRousse came from France
to settle in Kaskaskia. Their descendants
have accomplished much in behalf of the old
town, each generation of their number furnishing
some representative men.
Louis DeRousse was the son of Pierre K. DeRousse.
He was born in Kaskaskia on August 28, 1816.
At sixteen, he was bound as an apprentice
to the cabinet making business, and worked
at that business till he was twenty-one.
In November, 1842, he was married to Elizabeth
Unger, who died in February, 1860, leaving
four children. Louis then married Mary Mauger,
of New Jersey, but yet of French blood. There
were four children born to this marriage,
Elizabeth, Leon, Napoleon and John F.
DeRousse filled various offices of profit
and trust, with credit to himself and his
friends. He was widely known and highly respected.
He died May 2, 1878. His widow, a woman of
more than ordinary intelligence, is doing
an excellent part by her children and the
estate left her through the decease of her
husband.
